By analogy with rail, a demand for modern steam technology on the water was evident. SLM's steam team have developed a new 650 kW steam engine for the paddle steamer "Montreux" of Lake Geneva. The engine is controlled from the bridge, in combination with the fully automatic boiler. There is no need for permanent attendance in the engine room, which equals the staff requirement to the one of a comparable motor ship. It is remarkable that the "Montreux", originally steam powered, after being converted to diesel-electric drive, now reverts to a paddle steamer, with modern steam.
