25 years of modern steam traction

E-mail Print PDF

On June 17, 1992 the all-new designed rack tank steam locomotive  H 2/3 No. 12 had been inaugurated on Planalp, the middle station of the Brienz-Rothorn Railway, see photo above taken by Roger Waller. On his initiative the Swiss Locomotive-& Machine Works SLM in Winterthur built steam locomotives again, 40 years after delivery of the "last" SLM steam locoomotives for the Nigiri Railway in India. The new rack tanks have been built with the latest technology like economic one man operation and ultraclean light fuel oil firing. The Brienz-Rothorn Railway commerorates her 125 year anniversary. The Brienz-Rothorn Railway is worldwide unique by operating three generations of steam locomotives:

Steam Locomotives No. 1 to 5 built 1891/92

Steam Locomotives No. 6 and 7 built 1933/36

Steam Locomotives No. 12, 14 to 16 built 1992/96

The new, modern steam locomotives trasnsport the majority of passengers, but in the high season one or two old steam locomotives are in service as well.

E-mail Print PDF

Early on Sunday 21st  May 2017, 52 8055 worked light engine to Etzwilen, to haul an Orient-Express- and a Teakbar-carriage back to Schaffhausen. In the mean time, 01 519 of the Eisenbahnfreunde Zollernbahn EFZ e.V. hauled a special from Rottweil to Schaffhausen, where the trains were combined. Whilst 01 519 took a rest, 52 8055 pulled the train via Bülach to Winterthur. The passengers from Rottweil took the opportunity to visit the steam centre (Dampfzentrum Winterthur). 52 8055 steamed with new passengers to Romanshorn. After a break of two hours the train continued its journey along the scenic Lake of Constance back to Winterthur and Schaffhausen. 01 519 brought its train back to Rottweil, while 52 8055 returned the luxury carriages to Etzwilen.

Leo, our youngest passagier, enjoys the steam trip as much as anyone else. Thanks to the clean combustion of the light oil firing of 52 8055 there is no need for goggles to protect his eyes from sparks and cinders omnipresent with coal-fired locomotives. Photo: Robert Mathis

Next day, on May 22, 52 8055 was again booked to haul a real freight train.
